In environmental physics, our students have the possibility to get solid knowledge about the oceans, the atmosphere, and in terrestrial environmental research. Within the framework of a diploma work, our students many times have even been taking part in interesting worldwide expeditions !

Interesting projects for your diploma work are available here, however other projects may be possible in addition, depending on your abilities, and fields of interest. Do not hesitate to make contact to the divisions listed below:

November 2011 - Master Thesis

The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) issues a Diploma / Master thesis with the subject "Remote sensing of snow on Arctic sea ice" with satellite observations of passive and active microwave sensors. Snow on sea ice influences the heat transfer from ocean to atmosphere, and via the albedo the radiative balance, and snow exerts almost as much friction to ships as the ice does.
While the sea ice extent has been detected from satellites since many years, the snow on top of it has attained little attention until now.
